Mumbai, 26th Feb 2023: Kamgar Sanrakshan Sammaan Sangh after months of follow-up with the Maharashtra Building and Other Construction Workers Board and Urban Company registered the first worker from (UC) under the Board. The registration will enable the worker to access various social security benefits including insurance, housing, healthcare, scholarships for children etc. It’s a major development in our union’s efforts towards bringing aggregators under the regulatory framework.

Urban Company worker Sharik is an AC repair mechanic posing with his MBoCW ID card. KSSS office bearers met him outside his residence in Dharavi to hand over the ID card. Devendra Suyal of the Ishqestan band also joined us on this occasion who sings for the working class.

In this picture (LtoR)  Devendra Suyal, KSSS president Bilal Khan, Sharik and Akhilesh Rao treasurer of KSSS can be seen.

As employment is taking newer forms in the platform economy, it is important that the rights of the workers are protected. The aggregator companies take advantage of the poor economic conditions of workers and force them to sign illegitimate contract terms. This enables companies to hire and fire workers as and when they want. While the company employs the workers as independent contractors, the working hours, wages and incentives are all controlled by the company without much transparency. We have recently come across a case in which a taxi service aggregator has forced the workers to sign the contract without even reading it. The app allows the worker to read the contract only after they have signed it.

Our work with Urban Company workers will focus on more registration to ensure social security and better employment terms for the workers.
